I was so excited to see a second book in The Devil and the Sea series because the first one was so good. This book is hot and covers several kinks (read the content warning if you have triggers) but has a lovely plot as well. Devil in the Details is a romance wrapped in a murder mystery wrapped in a fantasy world.
Book 2, Devil in the Details is Gael's story. Gael is a detective who recently lost his longtime work partner, Shadow Yor (see book 1). He is lonely and searching for several things in this book a confidant, meaning in his work and understanding of Shadow's choices in book 1. He finds everything and in Kai, a man he meets at an erotic club. They have several incredibly hot encounters but Gael isn't ready to commit quite yet. He's scared of so many things. I want to avoid giving any spoilers but this book is great the smutty parts are hot and the plot is engaging. I love a good grovelling scene and this book delivered sooo well.
I loved the push and pull both within and between the characters. They each learn how finding everything you ever wanted comes with a cost. Gael is lonely and seeking connection, but is terrified of finding it and possibly losing himself. He has this strong sense of morality and shame related to his preferences in bed but is a slave to the nature of his species. The character work in this book was very intriguing and kept me invested (murder mystery isn't really my fave plot line generally).
This is book 2 in the series but I think it can be read as a standalone. The author reviews the important parts of book one in a way that helps the reader understand what happened previously. I loved book 1 and it does provide context to Gael's story, so I'd recommend starting with it but it's not required.

I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review. it’s like a murder mystery, except you know who the murderer is the whole time, and the “twist” is only news to gael bc it’s obvi from chapter 1 (in combination with the blurb) what’s going on. then, combine that with the fact that we see gael signing up for the first time at moonward manor and then it SKIPS FORWARD IN TIME to the point where there’s already been FIVE off page encounters with kai and the obsession is in full swing. ok then what am i even here for😭 dropping me in the middle of the story…..cool cool cool, now i can’t connect and that just makes the sex scenes read very clinical, and even kai’s presence and personality feels tamer than most of chani’s devils. but, as always with chani, i love the creativity, i love that you’re always getting completely new characters and traits, and that’s the only reason i was able to finish. bc really, giving me a murder mystery with no mystery🙄 like what am i supposed to do with that babes??💀 Devil in the Details continues Gael's story as he was featured heavily in Between the Devil and the Sea. With his story, you can see his pain and confusion from his previous partner's decisions and must reconcile his feelings with the fallout of everything.
Gael is invited to a murder mystery party, where he can indulge in all his fantasies when everything turns upside down due to an actual murder. Everything quickly spins out of control as multiple guests wind up dead and you discover there is a completely separate game in play with Gael as the main player, even without his knowledge.
Overall I enjoyed the unique setup of this story. I liked getting Gael's perspective and understanding his feelings towards his former partner and watching his falling for Kai. Kai is a completely different beast and I enjoyed the slow unraveling of his secrets.
I love being back in this world and would love to get of these fascinating morally grey characters.
