This historical novel is based on the true story of Li Shimin (also known as Tang Taizong), the greatest sovereign in Chinese history. About 30 years younger than Muhammad, he grew up in a world of devastating upheaval that tore China asunder and was thrust into the role of a military commander in his father’s rebel army while still a teenager. In the process of vanquishing his enemies on the battlefield, he proved himself to be a great military genius on a par with Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Napoleon. As emperor, he reigned over a period of Pax Sinica, which was to a large extent as a consequence of his willingness to listen to and adopt the critical suggestions of his court officials. To the religions of his day—Buddhism, Daoism, and Christianity—he showed a high degree of tolerance. The prestige he had won for Tang China was so high that the states of Central and North Asia honored him with the title of “Heavenly Khan.” Although his father founded the dynasty, it was his reign that laid the groundwork for a brilliant empire that was to endure for centuries. “Heavenly Khan” by Victor Cunrui Xiong is a historical fiction novel of the rise and reign of the first two emperors of the Tang Dynasty – Li Yuan, and his son Li Shimin, in the 7th Century (using the Western calendar). Some historians consider this period a high point in Chinese civilization and culture, although it was certainly not devoid of wars, carnage, and intrigue. The book tracks the rise to power of Li Yuan, stepping into a void created by the fall of the prior ruthless regime, and the decades-long reign of Li Shimin.

What was funny, was that I just got done watching the history channel about the Khan and then was provided a chance to review this title. It was definitely fate that brought me to this magnificent read. Heavenly Khan by Victor Cunrui Xiong is an extraordinary historical novel that will have readers traveling back in time when the Khan were alive. These moments with the Khan are one of China's greatest historical time periods. I found it quite intriguing and fascinating as the history came, to life, on these well-written pages. Heavenly Khan is about the dangers that were presented to China that brought them to building up their army as well as their defenses to keep out their attackers.
